Sound Assignment

 The Proposal:

The image I chose is the artwork known as the third of May 1808 by Francisco Goya. The image I have chosen is a single artwork that is not a part of any series. The painting was completed in 1814. The story behind the artwork is that the French army gathered the Spanish freedom fighters who were executed by Napoleon’s army because of their uprising against the French occupation on 2nd May 1808.

Francisco Goya was a Spanish painter whose art pieces, illustrations, and carvings represented specific historical uprisings and influenced significant nineteenth- and twentieth-century painters. The etching series Disasters of War (1810-14) depicts the atrocities of Napoleon's invasion. Naked Maja, The Clothed Maja (c. 1800-05), and The Third of May 1808 are among his other masterpieces (1814).

Although in the past Goya had depicted the sympathies of the French men, the martyrdom of the local citizen made a huge impact on him. Even though his other two paintings were also commemorated, the third of May is commended for being one of the great paintings of all time.

In the painting, we can see a line of French soldiers intending their weapons at a Spanish man, who extends out his arms in surrender to both the men and his fate. A hill just behind him continues to serve as an assassin's wall. A huge pile of dead bodies, stained with blood, lies at his feet. A path of Spanish protestors stretches into the distance on his other side. They close their eyes to avoid seeing the murder they are certain will happen. They have fallen behind the city and civilization. Even a monk who kneeled in supplication will soon fall into the ranks of the dead.

On the other hand, French soldiers are becoming mechanical or insect-like. They blend seamlessly into a single faceless, multi-legged life form incompetent of experiencing feelings and emotions. Nothing would ever prevent them from killing this man. In this powerful anti-war declaration, Goya criticizes not only the nations that declare war against one another but also us, the audiences, for being equally guilty in violent actions that take place not just between different levels of a notion like "countries," but also between humans standing a few feet off from one another.

I chose to use this artwork for my assignment because it depicts the horrors of that times and I can use sounds such as gunshots, people yelling and screaming in pain, agony and even despair; I will also add background sound to show the fear aspect that is being depicted in the artwork. I’ll be using Adobe Premiere Pro to work on the sound and when it comes to gathering the sound audio, I will try to make a sound on my own but if it is not working out then I will use the internet to find suitable sounds to use.

 The Sound Editing Process:

The process started with making the audio track on Adobe Audition. Since it was my first time using Audition I first decided to understand the basics. After that, I decided to come up with the audio tracks I would use, then edited them with effects such as full reverb, echo etc on Adobe Audition to show fear, an effect of the gunshots heard in the beginning. I exported the soundtrack giving a thorough check on the combination of audios.

The Final Sound Film:
